Cardiac Arrhythmia Ablation (Radiofrequency, Cryoablation, and Pulsed Field Ablation)
Cardiac arrhythmia ablation uses heat, cold, or electrical pulses to correct abnormal heart rhythms and help patients live with a steadier, healthier heartbeat.
From Heat to Cold to Precision Pulses
Customized Ablation Therapies for Atrial Arrhythmias
Atrial arrhythmia ablation is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat abnormal heart rhythms that originate in the upper chambers of the heart (atria), such as atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, or other supraventricular tachycardias. The goal is to restore a normal rhythm by creating small areas of scar tissue that block faulty electrical signals.
There are several advanced techniques available, each using different energy sources:
- Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA): Uses controlled heat to destroy targeted heart tissue causing the arrhythmia.
- Cryoablation: Uses extreme cold to freeze and disable the problem areas in the heart.
- Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA): A newer, non-thermal method that uses short electrical pulses to precisely target and treat the tissue while minimizing damage to surrounding structures.
Procedure & Recovery:
During the procedure, a thin catheter is inserted through a vein—usually in the groin—and guided into the heart. The selected ablation energy is applied to the specific areas responsible for the arrhythmia. Patients are typically under sedation or general anesthesia.
Most patients go home the same day or the following morning. Recovery is generally quick, with a return to normal activities in a few days. Follow-up visits and occasional monitoring help ensure the arrhythmia is under control.
Benefits:
- Significant reduction or elimination of atrial arrhythmia episodes
- Potential to reduce or stop certain heart rhythm medications
- Multiple technology options tailored to patient needs
- Low risk of complications with experienced care teams
