Carotid Ultrasound

A carotid ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test used to evaluate blood flow through the carotid arteries—the major vessels in the neck that supply oxygen-rich blood to the brain. By identifying narrowing, blockages, or plaque buildup, this test helps detect early signs of carotid artery disease, a leading cause of stroke.

Clear Pathways, Clear Minds

Non-Invasive Imaging to Evaluate Blood Flow and Prevent Stroke

What It Detects

  • Carotid ultrasound is commonly performed to:
  • Identify plaque buildup (atherosclerosis) that can narrow or block blood flow.
  • Evaluate blood flow after a stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA).
  • Monitor artery health after a carotid procedure such as stent placement or endarterectomy.
  • Assess stroke risk in patients with conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol.

Investigate abnormal sounds (bruits) detected over the carotid artery during a physical exam.

How It’s Done
A trained sonographer performs the test using a small handheld device called a transducer. After applying a warm gel to the skin, the transducer is gently moved along each side of the neck. The device emits high-frequency sound waves that create detailed images of the artery walls and the flow of blood within them.

The procedure is painless, does not involve radiation, and typically takes 15–30 minutes to complete.

What the Results Show

The ultrasound images help physicians determine if the carotid arteries are:

  • Normal: Allowing smooth, unobstructed blood flow.
  • Narrowed: Showing plaque buildup that may reduce circulation to the brain.
  • Blocked: Indicating a serious risk for stroke or requiring further treatment.

Results are reviewed by a radiologist or vascular specialist, who provides a report to your healthcare provider.

Benefits

  • Carotid ultrasound offers several important advantages:
  • Early detection of stroke risk.
  • Safe, non-invasive testing with no radiation exposure.
  • Real-time visualization of blood flow and plaque formation.
  • Useful for monitoring progress after treatment or surgery.
