ICD Care You Can Trust
Monitoring and support after your defibrillator implant.
What is an ICD?
An implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) is a small device placed under your chest skin to monitor your heart. It delivers electrical impulses or shocks to correct abnormal heart rhythms and help prevent sudden cardiac arrest.
Follow-Up & Monitoring
- Initial check-up: within 1 month of implant
- Routine visits: every 2–6 months, with remote monitoring available
- Checks include: device performance, battery, leads, and any therapies delivered
- Report symptoms: dizziness, fainting, palpitations, or shortness of breath
Post-Implant Care
- Keep your incision clean and dry
- Avoid lifting your implant-side arm above shoulder level for a few weeks
- Limit heavy lifting and vigorous activity until cleared
- Carry your ICD ID card and inform all healthcare providers
- Avoid strong magnets and electrical fields, and notify your doctor before MRIs
Seek care immediately for multiple shocks, infection signs, heart attack symptoms, dizziness, or fainting.
Long-Term Care
- Routine follow-ups keep your ICD working safely
- Remote monitoring may reduce in-office visits
- Following your doctor’s instructions helps you live confidently with your device
