Renal Ultrasound

A renal (kidney) ultrasound is a safe, painless imaging test that uses sound waves to create pictures of the kidneys and bladder. It helps doctors see how well the kidneys are working and whether there are any changes such as cysts, stones, blockages, or signs of infection. Because it doesn’t use radiation, this test is often chosen to monitor kidney health and guide treatment when problems are suspected.

At CASL Health, our team uses advanced ultrasound technology to deliver clear, detailed images that support accurate diagnosis and personalized care.

Advanced Imaging to Protect Kidney Function

What It Detects

A renal ultrasound allows the CASL Health team to examine the kidneys and surrounding areas for:

  • Cysts or masses in the kidney tissue.
  • Stones or blockages that affect how the kidneys drain.
  • Inflammation or infection within the kidneys.
  • Swelling or fluid buildup (hydronephrosis).
  • Changes in size, shape, or blood flow to the kidneys.
  • Post-surgical or transplant follow-up, including evaluation of a transplanted kidney.

This test provides clear, real-time images without radiation exposure and helps identify issues early before they lead to more serious complications.

How It’s Done

A trained sonographer from the CASL Health team performs the test using a small handheld device called a transducer. After you change into a gown, you’ll lie comfortably on an exam table. A warm gel is applied to your skin over the abdomen and sides, helping the device glide smoothly. The sonographer moves the transducer over the area to capture images of your kidneys and bladder.

You may be asked to hold your breath or change positions during the scan so the kidneys can be seen from different angles. The procedure is painless and typically takes 20–45 minutes.

How to Prepare

Preparation may vary, but often includes:

  • Drinking water before the test to fill the bladder for clearer images.
  • Avoiding bathroom breaks until after the exam is complete.
  • Wearing loose, comfortable clothing, as you may be asked to change into a gown or remove jewelry near the abdomen.

If you need to follow any dietary or medication instructions beforehand, your CASL Health provider will let you know in advance.

After the Procedure

There are no restrictions after the test — you can return to your usual meals and activities right away. A radiologist reviews the ultrasound images and sends the report to your CASL Health provider, who will go over the results and discuss any next steps in your care.

Benefits

  • Simple, safe, and completely non-invasive.
  • Helps detect kidney stones, cysts, infections, or blockages.
  • Provides clear images to guide diagnosis and treatment.
  • Uses sound waves only — no radiation or contrast dye.

The Connection Between Kidney and Heart Health

The kidneys play a key role in balancing blood pressure and filtering waste from the body — both essential to heart and vascular health. Detecting kidney changes early can help prevent complications that affect the heart, making renal ultrasound an important tool the CASL Health team uses to support overall cardiovascular wellness.
